Winter Cruising in the Sea of Cortez

The beauty of Sea of Cortez

This post to continue from our previous post.

December 5th, 2017 to January 14th, 2018

Strong Northerly Winter Winds set in within a week of us arriving in the Sea of  Cortez. This effectively trapped us to stay in La Paz. We needed major surgery (new head) on our outboard and also I {Stephen} wanted a good diesel mechanic. Since almost all the boats that arrive in La Paz need some sort of repair it takes time to get them done. So until the strong wind stopped which it could take times up to two weeks we took the chance to enjoy La Paz. After the outboard was fixed by a local American and the diesel given a clean bill of health  by another expat American, which many of them are,  resident in Mexico.  We know some good mechanic who lives here for many years. It is more easy to speak and explain in English than Spanish.

So we have time to get to know this very pleasant small city. Walking along the malecon to the market. Sometimes take a local bus to a supermarket or go where ever the bus will take and it could take us so far in the other side for Pesos 15.

We knew that we had limited time left to cruise, due to my {Luksana} immigration requirements for Canada.  We are curious to see some islands in the Sea of Cortez.

During Christmas and New Year 2018 we anchored in front of two places. Surrounding with wild birds, sea turtle swimming around or diving under our boat. We have met a National Geographic expedition boat while at Isla San Francisco.

What a great relief! In the Gulf of California is more relaxing than the Pacific side. At least if something go wrong we can anchor. Water in the sea of Cortez is not too deep. There are no facilities for the massive big cruise ships, which cannot enter to Canal de La Paz or through this shallow channel.

Isla San Francisco

Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla Partida

Originally a  volcano . Presented us a warm water with muddy whited sand. Water is shallow and green seaweed. Surrounding with sea birds, pelican, vulture, sea turtle and many types of fish.
These islands are very dry and only very hardy cactus seem to flourish here.
Luksana making friends with some very uncute vultures.
A good source to make a camp fire from this life ending cactus. There is no wood around area. A couple we met on the beach use dry cactus stick make a fire.

I think they are not the nicest creatures to share a deserted beach with.

The lip of the ancient volcanic creator was breached in 2 places the back one had a beach which made the anchorage a safe place. Very shallow towards the shore but the intense colours and unique position made it special.

Isla San Francisco

If mars had an ocean this could be its shoreline lol

S/V Beautiful Swimmer at Isla San Francisco. This is what we had in mind when we set off a couple of years before. All the time effort stress disappointing setbacks. The tough days in bad weather and the breakdowns and hassles, all forgotten when we look at this picture it really is as spectacular as this and it made you feel very special to be in such a different environment. As Luksana said Adventure Lifestyle

Because of the gales that kept everyone hemmed up in La Paz, When the weather allowed everyone left at once. This made the anchorages crowed at first until everyone spread out. Still not a bad place even if you have to share.

Not sure how much longer this bit of the island is going to stay attached.
